Climbers have reached out to EPAC and Prompton State Park about the status of climbing. We are providing this update to ensure the correct information is available to the climbing community. We will continue to make updates as new information becomes available.
- Official status = Climbing is prohibited.
- Although people have climbed there, climbing was technically never permitted in the park. Like other activities that take place in DCNR State Parks, an activity must be specifically “approved”.
- In January 2021, Prompton State Park reached out to EPAC via Mountain Project and requested the area be marked as closed since climbing was not a permitted use. EPAC immediately responded by updating online information per the request.
- In November 2021, EPAC Vice President, Joe Forte, met with park officials to explore the potential of opening access for climbing. Park officials are recommending rock climbing be added as a park activity. This will trigger an assessment process to ensure that rock climbing will not “have a significant impact on the ecological, environmental, geological archaeological or historical resources or values of the site.”
- EPAC is committed to providing whatever information, resources or support that is required during this process as well as if rock climbing becomes a permitted activity.
We ask all climbers to respect the current closure as we navigate the approval process. Attempting to climb in this area during the evaluation period jeopardizes the work done as we evaluate this location. While we are hopeful of the outcome, there is no guarantee of approval but your cooperation is paramount.
